DEVOTION ~The Good Tutor ~ by Pam Ford Davis

I relied on the aid of a tutor when cramming for my GED examinations. It was workable, yet, a humbling arrangement. I was currently teaching the young man’s college & career Sunday school class, when we had our temporary role reversals. He became algebra teacher and I, his inadequate student. With gratitude, I listened, learned and passed necessary exams.

Earlier, I learned under the tutorage of my dad. Before beginning kindergarten, he taught me his bunny ears method of tying my shoes. I vividly recall his teaching me the art of balancing my weight on a 24-inch bike. He held the back of my bicycle seat, running behind until he sensed I could solo. The Lord’s law serves as tutor.

“But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:23-26 NKJ).
A good tutor hopes to work him or herself out of their job. My algebra instructor did not sign a lifetime contract; his goal was clear. He intended to teach the basics of algebra, expecting me to study until gaining confidence needed, to pass upcoming tests. In regards to my Dad’s shoe tying and bike lessons, he patiently taught until I could do the tying or riding unassisted.

The Lord Jesus is patient and kind, knowing I can never make it through life alone. Without direct contact to him, I fail miserably. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; form without Me you can do nothing" (John 15:5 NKJ).

Did you catch that? I can do nothing (of eternal value) without Christ.
