Happily Ever After

"The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means.” Oscar Wilde

Do you like the fiction you read or watch to hold true to the above statement?

I do. I hope for it every time I open a book or see a movie. And when it doesn’t happen, I’m usually left feeling disappointed.

Willy Wonka: But, Charlie, don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he ever wanted.
Charlie: What's that?
Willy Wonka: He lived happily ever after.
—Roald Dahl, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

So why is that important in fiction?

I’ll let Nora Roberts explain:

"Happily ever after?"
"If justice doesn't triumph and love doesn't make the circle in entertainment fiction, what's the point? Real life sucks too often."
― Nora Roberts, Angels Fall

Hope you enjoy some Happily Ever Afters!

  1. I am in total agreement, Eva Maria! We can give our characters plenty of conflicts and disappointments, but they win in the end.

Your book sounds wonderful! As a historical writer I know all the research involved.

  4. Eva, I like a happy ending, too! Although I cope if I'm reading a genre that doesn't require the mandatory happy ending of a romance. I like a satisfying ending that resolves all the story questions :)
